Anhang: Die Kafir-Stämme von Natal (Gotha: Justus Perthes, 1856) An article in Dr. Augustus Petermann's 'Mittheilungen', volume X of 1856: the entire issue of the journal is supplied, though Bleek's contribution is confined to pp. 362-375. 274 x 228 mm; printed wrappers; pp. [349-392] + adverts.; some text figures; map, in colours, of Natal colony. Bump to tail of spine; light soiling to wrappers; some minor creasing and spotting. Good to very good condition, and housed in a film fronted bag. An exceptionally uncommon, though important, contribution to African ethnology, by one of the great pioneers in the field. German text. (Spohr & Poller, 203) "During his stay in Natal Bleek acquired a sound knowledge of Zulu, which, as a closely related Nguni language, was later of great help to him in learning Xhosa. ... He travelled extensively in Natal and stayed for a time at the kraal of the Zulu king, Mpande. He also met several Voortrekkers; they made a very favourable impression on him, but he found their manner of living fairly primitive. Several contributions in Petermann's Geographische Mitteilungen (sic) (1855 to 1857) deal with his experiences in Natal. Among his articles are: ... 'Forschungen in Natal' ... He also visited the Norwegian missionary, Bishop H. P. S. Schreuder, who in later years made an important contribution to the knowledge of Zulu. Throughout his stay in South Africa Bleek was anxious to meet the people interested in his subject." - DSAB I, pp. 82-3. £85.00
